The Viennale takes place in beautiful cinemas in Vienna’s historic center, providing the festival with an international orientation showing a carefully picked selection of new films from all over the globe. Gala screenings, special events and parties are as much part of the festival as interviews, audience discussions and opportunities to meet the many international guests of the festival.

Albertina modern’s autumn exhibition is dedicated to the abstract expressionism of the New York School. Figures including Pollock, Clyfford-Still, Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Barnett Newman, and Robert Motherwell were representatives of new freedom of art as manifested in their reinvention of American abstraction. The exhibition presents an international dialog including over 90 works by Austrian and international artists. It examines the interplay between abstract expressionism and informalism in the context of transatlantic dialog from the mid-1940s to the end of the Cold War.
