In times of travel restrictions, we get more used to the sound of birds singing than that of airplanes flying overhead. Forward Festival speakers Erik Kessels and Anthony Burrill collaborated with Malcolm Goldie to provide us with the ultimate, yet disturbing, mix of both.

Erik, Anthony and Malcolm created a one-of-a-kind record with outdoor sounds for the times at home when you need familiar everyday sounds the most. Bird song and aeroplane recordings are carefully arranged in an audio collage of pleasant and unpleasant sounds. The record creates an unsettling listening experience featuring famous artists like the House Sparrow, Airbus A320, Blue Tit, Boeing 777X, Wood Pigeon and a Cessna 172. In times where the sound of birds and airplanes are absent due to the fact we have to stay indoors, this record could provide the ultimate but disturbing mix of both of them.

Anthony says: “When Erik and I first spoke about making a record mixing bird song and plane noises, I thought it was a ridiculous idea. We asked Malcolm Goldie to create the sound composition and sprinkle a touch of humor into the mix. Now that we’ve made the record and are ready to release it, I still think it’s mad. Sometimes it’s good to make idiotic things happen.”

Learn from the best: Never stop making idiotic things happen because they might turn out to be pure gold!
